At home, in Her chambers, Her mantel removed and withdrawn in Her nightwear, with Her musicke, Her wordes and Her teares, we join Her Majesty and Her writings with songes and musicke for the Virginalles in a remarkable spoken, sung and played programme of Dowland, Byrd, Morely and Gibbons with the readings in original pronunciation of Shakespeare sonnets and the poems and writings of Her Majesty Elizabeth Regina of England and His Majesty James VI Rex of Scotland, in costume and leaden painted visage.
Elizabeth, the warrant for the execution of Mary Queen of Scots having been delivered and enforced, contemplates with sadness the void which Her Monsieur, the “Frog” as She affectionately called him, the Duke d’Anjou, has left behind in his parting, leaving Her with the daunting task of writing a letter alone in response to one from Her cousin, King James VI of Scotland in which He pleaded for His mother’s life. Elizabeth, however, must inform Him of His mother’s execution and attempt to deny blame for it. Sending Her Scottish Ambassador to tell the real story She is able to leave the truth out of the written historical record and so becomes one of the world’s first leaders to write their own version of history.
